Description:
Join guest instructor Nikki Frese in learning to use bronze clay.  Participants will create a three piece triangle that will be connected to form a pendant.  For those who have taken other BronzClay classes at Beadology, you will expand on your knowledge with this class.  Techniques will be emphasized.  Discussion on how to finish metal clay pieces will be discussed.   Students’ work will be fired and tumble polished.  Work can be picked up the following week.

Brick Stitch Woman with Skirt

Students will learn brick stitch, one of many off loom bead weaving techniques.  Using cylinder beads, students will form the torso of a woman, with 3-dimensional arms.  Fringe creates a skirt to create a flowing earring or pendant.  One woman will be made in class.

Make Two Bracelets: Basic Stringing and Crimping through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program

Description:

Bracelets are big this season.  Wearing multiple bracelets at once is even better.  This class places a focus on professional stringing and design techniques.  You will make two bracelets using two different stringing materials. One bracelet will be made strung on nylon using glass beads from the Czech Republic and sterling silver beads.  The second bracelet will be strung on flexible wire and made with handmade glass and Swarovski crystals.  You will learn how to use crimp beads to finish this bracelet.  Both bracelets will be secure and beautiful.  No previous experience is necessary.

Registration is through Kirkwood Community College or on site--follow this link to register through Kirkwood. and look for Beadology Iowa under the instructor search.

On site registrations will be taken but not counted towards the minimum class size in order for the class to take place. This is the first of five independent classes through Kirkwood.

Peyote Stitch Techniques

Description:
Peyote stitch is a basic and incredibly versatile seed bead weaving technique. Beading magazines have many projects that utilize peyote stitch. This workshop will share flat and tubular peyote techniques. Learn when to use each stitch and walk away with samples of each. This is a techniques, not a project class. 

Note:  This class is a prerequisite for the Bezelled Rivoli class scheduled in April. The April class list will be out in early March at the latest.

Mala Bracelet

Make your own prayer bracelet, called a Mala using elastic, beads, and a tassel.  Prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited when praying or meditating.  Many religious practices use a form of mala. This mala will be in the Buddhist/Hindu tradition of 27 beads.

Make 3 Pairs of Earrings: Basic Wirework through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program

Description:

Who doesn’t need a new pair of earrings?  Learn to make earrings for yourself or as gifts.  Two wirework skills will be practiced and used to make three pairs of earrings.  The first skill is making a closed wrapped loop that allows you to make earrings and pendants.  The second skill is making a closed wrapped loop inside of a closed loop, allowing you to attach dangles to chains.  You will make earrings from glass, stone, pearls, and Swarovski crystals.

Solid instruction on the use of jewelry tools will assist you in making three pairs of earrings.  You will receive encouragement in discovering simple yet elegant earring designs.

Viking Knit Bracelet

Description:
Learn the basics of Viking knit, a centuries-old form of weaving wire using a looping-technique created around a solid, stationary form such as a wooden dowel. The woven tube is then gradually reduced in size by pulling through a series of holes on a draw plate and formed into jewelry or other objects. This project uses copper wire and findings.

Description:
Continue to explore the art of lampworking with a torch and glass rods. In this class, you will learn more techniques for manipulating color, making the perfect dot, and shaping with a goal of making a variety of more complicated shapes, including a hollow bead--see the great fish beads in the photo to the left. Your beads will be annealed overnight at the store.

You must be at least 15 years old to register for this class.

Peyote Stitch Beaded Beads through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program

Description:

Weaving with beads isn’t has complicated as it looks.  Peyote stitch is a versatile and often used seed bead weaving technique.  Students will make beads by beading a rectangle then folding it up and zipping it closed to make a tight and seamless tube.  Fancy your bead up by adding layers of embellishment.  Samples of finished jewelry using peyote stitch will be available with discussion on the techniques used to construct them.

Making glass beads is great fun and an opportunity to do something outside of your normal routine.  You’ll have an unusual response to give when friends ask you what is new in your life.  This class will increase your hand-eye coordination and allow you to make beads that can be used in jewelry making. 

 This class will teach you the art of lampworking, a technique of using a torch and melting glass rods to create various shapes.  Safety and appropriate equipment handling are emphasized.  Your beads will need to stay in a kiln overnight to be annealed. 

NOTE:  Participants must be at least 15 years old.
